Programme Description

San Mei Gallery would like to invite recent graduates of art and design degrees to apply to our new residency and teaching programme, taking place in Chengdu, China from July to August 2018.

There are two roles available with return flights, visa, insurance, a private room in shared accommodation and studio space, all provided, as well as local orientation and support once in Chengdu. The programme will culminate with an exhibition opportunity at San Mei Gallery in South London.

The applicant must be a graduate artist who has been through the UK system from A level, foundation and university. They must show a commitment to teaching UK foundation portfolio preparation lessons five mornings a week whilst on the residency and have strong organisation skills.

The residency will also provide time for reflection, research, presentation and production outside of the teaching hours. It is an opportunity to explore teaching, learning and artistic processes in a different framework and location, encouraging cultural exchange. The artists will then have a presentation/ exhibition of the work made whilst on the residency. Candidates should have an interest in China and/or some knowledge of the language or culture.

The candidates will be required to write a statement to indicate ideas they have for teaching and progress they hope to make in their own work. They will also meet with the San Mei Gallery group to prepare a set lesson plan and schedule for the residency period. San Mei will provide a framework of hours and student level.

San Mei Gallery hopes to develop a relationship between the artist in residence in the periods before the residency in the form of planning and project formation (meetings in June and visa applications); during the residency in the form of teaching and creative updates; and after the residency in the form of a presentation, documentation or exhibition of work and research at San Mei Gallery. The residency will be as much a teaching and learning experience as a time to investigate personal artistic practice. There is potential for the residency experience to form the start of a longer relationship with San Mei Gallery.
